KUCHING: The expression ‘treat others how you want to be treated’ applies to not only how we treat our fellow human beings, but also towards how we treat our furry friends.

According to Member of Parliament for Batang Sadong Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, animals should not be treated as if they’re a burden to us, but it is rather alarming to see how many owners are willing to abandon them for their own convenience. She said although this has led to quite a number of strays roaming the city, it does not mean that the animals should be treated as if they are annoying or troublesome. “For some people, they see animals as their companions or as extended family members.

“Therefore, animals should be treated with love, care and kindness,” said Nancy in her speech when attending Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) Christmas Charity Bazaar 2018 at the Association of Churches Building at Jalan Stampin, yesterday. Nancy also pointed out that apart from volunteering at the animal shelter to assist, the public also can help the stray animals by taking care of them.

“Let us be the ones to provide the strays out there with love, shelter and care,” she said. She also called for the public to help SSPCA in their cause by donating or contributing in any way that can help the strays. Earlier on, SSPCA president Datin Donna Drury-Wee said that SSPCA is looking for willing quantity surveyors and builders, as well as members of the public, to help them build the SSPCA Animal Village.

She said at the same time, SSPCA will also be looking for a suitable house for their low-cost neutering clinic that is supported by the government. “We hope to have a robust neutering program that can be rolled out throughout the state and especially in areas that do not have access to veterinarian services,” she said.
