KUCHING: The state government will sponsor welfare micro-entrepreneurs (UMKs) who achieved the highest sales (Platinum and Diamond categories) to go on a one-week educational visit to Japan and Korea next year.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said this was to provide exposure for these entrepreneurs to further elevate their capabilities.

“They will be able to visit these two countries and see how these countries develop their small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and their products. Thus, they (micro-entrepreneurs) will be able to increase their knowledge.

“The costs will be borne by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government,” he said when officiating at Sarawak Welfare Micro-Entrepreneurs Day (HUMKS) 2020 at Pullman Hotel here on Wednesday.

He said that he chose these two countries as they had expertise in SMEs and equipment used in the processing of food products.

The state government would work out a collaboration with the two countries’ embassies to allow for this educational visit.

“I hope that those UMKs who have won in these two categories (Platinum and Diamond) can learn something, and when they return, they will be able to benefit from what they have experienced there,” said Abang Johari.

He added that this was another approach by the state government to upgrade business acumen among the UMKs.

At HUMKS 2020, a total of 12 UMKs were awarded for achieving the high sales, with two awarded in the Platinum category (sales revenue exceeding RM300,000 in a year) and one in the Diamond category (between RM150,000 to RM300,000).

Also present were the Chief Minister’s wife Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, KWKPK Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, Assistant Minister of Community Wellbeing Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus.
