KUCHING: Local travel agents and hotels have been told to be creative in keeping business alive amidst the movement control order.

They should opt for virtual tour approach to attract visitors and put Sarawak in their must-visit bucket list in the future, said tourism expert YS Chan.

He said virtual tours were best left to tourism industry players who can find audience and revenue for their efforts.

“While promotions for general audience can be done by state tourism authorities, tourism industry players should sell their products to targeted niche markets through virtual at this moment,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when contacted yesterday.

Although sightseeing probably would be the last thing on most people’s minds due to the current pandemic outbreak, Chan believed that creating more video clips and posting these through various social media platforms would enhance the promotion of their services.

“Most people prefer to watch short videos rather than long documentaries.

“Video clips with interesting titles will attract people’s attention,” he pointed out.

Encouraging Sarawakians to record and upload more interesting or amusing video clips, he said by giving out token monthly prizes to those who participate can help boost traffic in social media.

“Developing destination digital apps which contain all the interesting and useful information, including for booking and payment, can enhance promotion.

Chan further suggested that local inbound travel agents collaborate with overseas outbound agents for greater promotion of their service.
