TATAU: A tuai rumah (longhouse chieftain) must at least have Form Three academic qualification and should be able to read and write.

Native Laws and Customs Assistant Minister Datuk John Sikie Tayai said such criteria are important in the appointment of a community leader.

“Similarly, the village development and security committee (JKKK) secretary should know how to use a computer.

“This is because the minutes of every meeting should be sent to the District Office at least six times a year.

“The state government has also approved to pay the JKKK secretary an allowance of RM300 per month,” he said.

He said this when officiating at a ‘leader with the people’ ceremony held at Rh Nanang, Sungai Senunok in Kakus here on Saturday.

Sikie further said that there are a lot of matters which need to be discussed related to development, economy and education and other important matters including the presentation of JKKK financial reports to longhouse residents.

“The task of a tuai rumah is not easy, in line with the current developments. They should always go to the district office or the relevant government agencies.

“In fact, I myself monitor the presence of the tuai rumah in the attendance book available at the District Office.

“They are the bridge between the government and the people and they must work with the elected representatives and the ruling government to ensure that development continues,” he added.

He also mentioned that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed to allocate RM7 million to upgrade the roads to Rh Edward Jalin and Rh Tadong, as well as Rh Nanang, Sungai Senunok.

The same event witnessed Sikie presenting funds of RM30, 000 to the JKKK of Rh Nanang and allocation of RM40,000 to level the site of a new longhouse for Rh Nanang, Sungai Senunok.

Also present were Bintulu Public Works Department (JKR) assistant engineer Ngu Tie Hua, Penghulu Lubon Kinchang and Penghulu Michael Agul.
