MUKAH: Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) will become a game changer in the government’s effort of producing a highly skilled workforce.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said this would directly help in reducing the country’s dependence on foreign manpower.

“The government will continue to enhance the ability of Malaysian youths in skilled-based training to ensure that the industry’s needs can be filled by local workforce in line with Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0,” she said at the closing of ‘Sayangi Komoditiku Bual Bicara Latihan dan Kerjaya’ programme at UiTM Mukah Campus here yesterday.

The one-day programme was attended by students from institutions of higher learning and secondary schools. A series of talks on commodities and related topics were also held.

Meanwhile, Wan Azizah said the commodity sector was among the main contributors to the national economy.

According to her, as of July, the agricommodity sector and commodity-based products had contributed RM71.2 billion to the country’s total export.

She said of the total, RM36.9 bln was contributed by the oil palm sector, RM17.6 bln by the rubber sector and RM12.5 bln by the wood sector.

“To ensure that the country’s commodity sector remains sustainable, it really needs experienced and skilled human capital.

“This is an important factor so that the commodity sector can be enhanced in order to generate income for the country,” Dr Wan Azizah said, adding that this sector needed a local workforce to reduce dependency on foreign workers who constituted about 75 per cent, especially in the oil palm sector.
