MIRI: Miri police believed that they have crippled an ‘Ah Long’ (illegal money lenders) syndicate here with the arrest of two suspects yesterday morning.

The duo was nabbed near the compound of Bekenu’s Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) around 11am by a team from the Miri Police Commercial Crime Department.

Miri police chief, ACP Lim Meng Seah when confirming the arrest said the suspects, both from Seri Kembangan, Selangor, aged 23 and 33 years are currently under police custody.

“Both are being questioned by our officers,” said Lim in a statement yesterday.

During the arrest, police seized potential evidence, including seven bank cards, 160 ‘green cards’ (for debtors), RM313, a passport, 750 business cards, a car key, three sling bags, two handphones and a pick-up truck.

The police team was led by Inspector Jegathesan Arumugam.

It was believed that the syndicate has been active for about two months prior to the arrest.

Action will be taken under Section 5(2) and Section 29AA of the Moneylenders Act, 1951.
