KOTA BHARU: Two associations in Kelantan yesterday expressed shock over the resignation of the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V, as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Sunday.

They are Pertubuhan Peradaban Melayu Malaysia Kelantan (Peradaban) and Persatuan Siam Kelantan.

Peradaban president Datuk A. Aziz Deraman said the decision to step down raised questions because everyone knew that the sultan was a ruler with the people’s well-being at heart.

“Nevertheless, we accept the decision with an open heart because it must have been made with wisdom and taking into account all aspects,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said the people must remain loyal to the successor of Sultan Muhammad V and defend the institution of the monarchy in the country.

Persatuan Siam Kelantan advisor Eh Chot Cha Chan said the Siamese community had remained loyal to Sultan Muhammad V and respected the ruler’s decision to step down.

Although the decision came as a shock, the Siamese community was happy that Sultan Muhammad V would return to rule in Kelantan, he said.
