Two caught for theft, burglary

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Two men believed to be actively involved in car thefts and break-ins here were arrested yesterday (Aug 10).

District police chief DSP Sudirman Kram said the police mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit came across a suspicious vehicle in front of a supermarket near Jalan Medan Universiti here during their patrol at 6.50pm.

The unit approached the vehicle for inspection and found a man rushing to the front seat with his passenger before fleeing the scene.

“The MPV unit proceeded to chase the car all the way to Taman Merdang Gayam. The car also hit the front of the MPV before crashing into a cement pavement barrier.

“The duo attempted to escape by running towards a nearby bush but were eventually caught,” Sudirman said in a statement.

He added that inspections were conducted on both men, aged 33 and 41, from Kuching, and found various equipment believed to be used for vehicle theft and burglary.

Among the items found were 22 keys from various types of vehicles, T-shaped keys, iron cutters, sharpeners, rattan, rubber, hand gloves and a double stick weapon.

Sudirman added that the vehicle used by the suspects was also found to have been stolen and reported missing in Bintulu on Aug 4.

“The individuals along with the seized items were taken to Kota Samarahan district police headquarters (IPD) for further actions.

“Checks found that the men had previous criminal records respectively — nine and 10 relating to crime and drugs,” he said.

With the arrest of these men, the police believed they several burglary and vehicle theft cases that had occurred here and nearby districts were solved.
