KUCHING: A man and his passenger sustained injuries following a crash involving a van and an ambulance at Jalan Datuk Marican Salleh traffic light intersection here on Monday (Apr 5).

The accident took place at 9.40am when the ambulance was rushing a patient to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Firemen from Padungan Fire and Rescue Station were despatched to the scene after attending to a fire incident near Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pending at Jalan Tun Razak here.

Sarawak Traffic Police chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu said the cause of the accident was due to the van driver not being aware of the ambulance that had its siren blaring.

“Both injured victims were taken to hospital in another ambulance while the medical staff and their patient in the ambulance involved in the crash were unharmed,” he said.

Alexson added that the case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Two years ago, a similar incident happened at the Green Road traffic light intersection here when a four-wheel drive vehicle crashed into an ambulance that was rushing a pregnant woman to SGH.
