Two intoxicated drivers nabbed

Road users take a breath test to check whether they are driving under the influence of alcohol.

KUCHING: Police arrested two men for driving under the influence of alcohol during a roadblock at Jalan Simpang Tiga here on Saturday.  

Kuching district deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said that the roadblock codenamed ‘Ops Mabuk’ took place from 9.30pm until 2am by a team of police and army personnel.  

“During the operation, three local men aged 19, 35 and 38 years were detained and brought to Kuching police district headquarters (IPD) for a breath test.  

“Test results revealed that two of them (aged 19 and 35) were positive with alcohol content exceeding 99mg/100mg and 208mg/100mg respectively while, the other tested negative,” he said in a statement.  

The duo face charges under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM6,000, or imprisonment not exceeding 12 months.  

During the operation, a total of 48 summonses were issued for various traffic offenses such as no driving license, failing to produce a license, fancy plate number, expired vehicle license, expired driving license, expired road tax, failing to display ‘P’, vehicle structure modification, and not having side mirror.

Merbin pointed out that 55 vehicles and 76 individuals were inspected during the ‘Ops Mabuk’ roadblock.

“Such operation will be conducted continuously to detect errant in an effort to reduce the road accidents rate.  

“The police will never compromise on intoxicating offenders and legal action will be taken if they are found to be driving under the influence of alcohol,” he said.
