Two killed in ‘waterhead’ phenomenon

MIRI: A General Operations Force (GOF) personnel and a security guard of the Sabah-Sarawak gas pipeline (SSGP) were killed in a ‘waterhead’ phenomenon in Sungai Layun, Ulu Baram last Thursday.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail, who confirmed this, said their bodies of the two victims were transported to Miri Hospital morgue on Friday night from Long Lama clinic by a team of Miri GOF. A post-mortem on the bodies will be conducted on Monday (7 Dec).

Aidi said the GOF personnel has been identified as Sergeant Simon Laja, 47, from Sungai Berangan, Sarikei, while the other victim, Kemian, 50, was a security guard for the SSGP at Layun Camp in Ulu Baram.

The bodies were found around 3pm on Friday after they were swept away while resting near Sungai Layun in Ulu Baram during a routine operation on Thursday.

Six others comprising GOF personnel and SSGP security guards survived.
