Two nabbed for driving under influence of alcohol

KUCHING: Police arrested two men during an ‘Ops Mabuk’ operation for driving under the influence of alcohol.

District acting police chief, Supt Merbin Lisa said the operation was conducted at Jalan Simpang Tiga from 9pm Friday until early Saturday morning by 11 personnel from the Kuching Traffic Police Division.

During the operation, the team detained three men and a woman on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

“All of them aged between 19 and 53 were taken to Kuching police headquarters (IPD) to undergo breath analyser tests.

“Results found that two men had alcohol content in their body exceeding the allowable limit while the woman and another man tested negative and were later released,” he said.

The two who were detained will be charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for a fine up to RM30,000 or jail for a term up to five years.

Merbin said the police team also issued 21 traffic summonses for various traffic offences after inspecting 71 people in 60 vehicles.

The traffic offences included no driving licence, not wearing seat belts, no registration number, plate number that do not follow the regulations, failure to produce driving licence, expired road tax, modified exhaust, modified equipment structure, and no side mirrors.
