Two persons involved in job scam released on bail

KUCHING: A 25-year-old woman and 35-year-old man have been released on a total bail of RM5,000 in two sureties by a magistrate court in Kuching after they pleaded not guilty to a charge of cheating in a Cambodia job scam.

The accused, Margerat Muna Anyut and Lam Sang Kiong, who were alleged as telephone scammers impersonating bank officers, were charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code. The offence is punishable with a jail sentence of up to five years or a fine or both if convicted.

The charged was read together by prosecuting officer Insp Nelson Ensit in front of Magistrate Mohd Syukri Mokhtar.

Both accused pleaded not guilty and were release on bail of RM5,000 — Margerat RM4,000 and Lam RM1,000 — with a local sureties respectively. A pre-trial case management has been fixed for July 31, under investigation paper in Padawan.

Meanwhile, Crime Investigation Department (CCID) chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah said police have arrested six persons in the case from Feb 23 to Apr 25, this year.

A total of eight investigation papers have been opened (four in Padawan, three in Kuching, and one in Bintulu).

Four have been charged in court so far including the two newly accused. The two others were Chang Ying Shiong and Mohd Ghafar Abd Jamal who were charged under Section 415(b) of the Penal Code at the magistrate’s court in Kuching on March 13 and May 2,
respectively.

He added Chang will be charged at charged under Section 417 of the Penal Code for cheating under an investigation paper in Padawan in July 24.

While, Mohd Ghafar will be charged under the same Code, trial on Aug 21 and the second trial on Aug 3 and 4 for two investigation papers (one in Kuching and another in Padawan).

Mustafa said another investigation paper in Kuching will be presented to the court to charged two individuals under Section 417 of the Penal Code next week.

He added three investigation papers (two in Kuching and another in Bintulu) is still under investigation.
