Two plead not guilty to robbery charges

KUCHING: Two men pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to snatching a woman’s handbag at Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol on Sept 26.

The Court rejected an appeal made by one of the accused, who is a labourer, in request for bail.

Meanwhile, the other accused who was unable to be present in court due to hospitalisation for his injuries, had the charge read to him at the hospital, and he pleaded not guilty as well.

According to the facts of the case, the incident occurred at 11.45am when the victim was heading home on her motorcycle.

The two suspects, aged 22 and 44, came from behind and snatched her handbag which was placed in the motorcycle’s front basket.

The victim proceeded to chase the suspects, and grabbed hold of the pillion rider’s shirt which caused both motorcycles to crash at the side of the road.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident immediately rushed to the scene to help the victim and apprehended the suspects.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad fixed Oct 28 for re-mention of the case.

Both accused was charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang-robbery, and shall be liable to whipping and a maximum of 20 years in prison if found guilty.
