SHORT VIDEO CONTEST

KUCHING: Two secondary schools were today adjudged winners of a short video competition for Sarawak Science Festival. 

Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tinggi Sarikei and SMK Green Road won in separate categories of the contest that was organised in conjunction with the Sarawak state-level National Science Week (MSN).

Present to officiate at the prize-giving and closing ceremony held at Chemsain Building, Jalan Rock here, was Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin Jawong.

SMK Green Road won the “Young Scientist” category with its water treatment project while SMK Tinggi Sarikei won the “MSNLens” category with its invention of an alternative way to replace the universal indicator which is commonly used in school laboratories.

Both schools walked away with cash prizes worth RM1,000, a trophy, hamper and certificates respectively.

The “MSNLens” short video competition, themed “Application of Science in Community” was opened for all schools throughout Sarawak.

Meanwhile, for the “Young Scientist” category, selected schools were adopted by six agencies namely Department of Agriculture Sarawak, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, Department of Environment Sarawak, Chemsain Konsultant Sdn Bhd and Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC).

The representatives of the schools had to create projects based on their respective agencies’ field of expertise as well as core business.

SMK St Columba, Miri came in second place followed by SMK Green Road in third place and SMK Tun Abdul Razak together with another team from SMK Tinggi Sarikei received consolation prizes for the “MSNLens” category.

For the “Young Scientist” category, SMK Bandar Samariang came in second place while Lodge National School won third place. SMK Sungai Tapang, SMK Siburan and SMK St Mary received consolation prizes respectively.
