KUCHING: Mentoring the younger generation is equally vital because getting into politics is not as easy as it may seem, said Datuk Amar Douglas Unggah Embas.

Uggah, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president, said this when asked to comment on Santubong incumbent Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s decision not to run in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

“In PBB, we always have this culture where, if one believes that his or her time is over, then he or she will decide to step aside.

“Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi’s move (not to contest in his Santubong seat) is intended to open doors for the younger generation to participate in politics.

“That being said, we can only respect his decision,” he said after launching the Borneo Occupational Safety and Health Conference and Exhibition (BOSH 2022) at the Pullman Hotel here today (Nov 1).

It was previously announced that Wan Junaidi has suggested his political secretary Datuk Seri Syed Hamzah Syed Paie to run as the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for the Santubong seat in the forthcoming parliamentary election.

He claimed that Syed Hamzah is the best option should GPS chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, decides not to renominate him to defend the seat.

Wan Junaidi served as Batang Lupar MP for three terms from 1990 before switching to Santubong in 2004 and retaining the seat since then.

The GPS will be announcing its list of candidates for the GE15 this Thursday (Nov 3).
