KUCHING: A total of 86 visually impaired patients have been sponsored by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas to have their eyesight fixed.
He had borne the cost of 70 Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) for 70 patients and 16 Pterygium patients at the 13th Betong Cataracts Camp, which will be on Feb 21-22.
Lions Club of Kuching Metro action coordinator Andrew Chioh said the 86 patients were selected from a pool of 216 patients who joined the 13th Preliminary Screening Betong Cataracts Camp held from Feb 3-6.
“There are 98 Cataracts patients and 33 Pterygium patients. Only 70 Cataracts patients and 16 Pterygium patients will be scheduled for the operations this time round,” he said,
Chioh said that the contribution by Uggah was his regular commitment since 2013.
“His generous sponsorship of 648 Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) has restored the sight for 642 needy patients.
“With his continuous support and generosity sponsoring the IOLs, more awareness of the availability of the outreach programme, where more and more patients have come forward to benefit.
“Majority of the population who came forward are Iban and Malay, whereas, Chinese being the minority had also come forward from the last few Cataracts Camps,” he said.
Chioh said Uggah also sponsored 15 Pterygium patients last year.
