KUCHING: The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) is in the midst of redefining and retuning the responsibilities of its officers.

“At present, there are 145 officers throughout Sarawak and there will be more recruitment soon,” said Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Ukas) Abdullah Saidol.

“We also urge the officers to work together with the media and to share information with each other so that all the initiatives by the state government will be well disseminated among the
communities.”

He said this at a press conference, accompanied by Ukas acting director Datuk Norhyati Ismail, when attending the unit’s first anniversary dinner here, Thursday.

Abdullah further stated that apart from disseminating information, Ukas officers would act as agents representing the state government to collect feedback from the public about the problems they faced in their respective localities.

“When they have good input about certain issues that relate to the people’s welfare, we will be able to structure better policies for the people.

“Although they (officers) are not cyber troopers, they have to be on alert for adverse news and various allegations towards the state government, especially on social media.

“With this, the state government will be able to draft a counter-news to correct and explain the misleading truth as well as to formulate a solution to fix the problem,” he added.

Abdullah also revealed that the ministry and Ukas would come up with a better line of communication between them in the near future thus, making Ukas a focal point for information on the state government.

Apart from the 145 officers present, the dinner was also attended by 31 political secretaries.
