KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has jumped to the 138th position in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings announced recently.

The university climbed 12 spots from the 150th position in last year’s ranking.

UKM stated in a statement today that the evaluation considers five factors, namely Citations, Industry Income, International Outlook, Research as well as Teaching, putting it in third position among Malaysia’s best institutions.

The statement added that based on the five indicators, UKM scored 43.8 for Teaching and 64.3 for International Outlook.

UKM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman said UKM is one of the universities in Malaysia that recorded significant improvement in the THE Asia University Rankings this year after Universiti Teknologi Petronas.

“Although upholding Bahasa Melayu remains the university’s main agenda, UKM has never neglected the element of internationalisation, which is equally important in maintaining the varsity’s reputation on the world stage.

“The significant increase in the International Outlook indicator will surely have a greater impact after the opening of the UKM campus in Qatar this October,” he said.

Mohd Ekhwan added that the university’s achievement in THE Asia University Rankings this year proved that UKM was on the right track in implementing strategic plans and improving quality under the TERAS framework (Talent, Ethics, Revitalise, Agile and Soul).

“University rankings is one of many instruments to benchmark ourselves with other institutions. I believe that we can attain a better position if we continue to strengthen our fundamentals in research, education and service,” he said. – BERNAMA
