KUCHING: United Malay National Organisation (Umno) president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s recent call to strengthen syariah laws in the country shows that he does not mind losing the support from the non-Malays.

In a new report by Free Malaysia Today (FMT), Senior Fellow of the Council of National Professors Dr Jeniri Amir said Zahid only care for the increased in the Malay votes.

“Umno was aware that non-Malays and non-Muslims still preferred Pakatan Harapan (PH) anyway and was concerned only with getting votes from Malays in constituencies in the peninsula.

“However, for Malaysia to move forward, that kind of political narrative is outdated,” he said as reported.

In view of this, he said Umno needs to be more inclusive and moderate instead.

“The best man to create a moderate path for Umno would be his current deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan,” he said.

On the matters concerning the next elections, Dr Jeniri also speculated that Barisan Nasional (BN) would have a greater chance to win more seats if Mohamad Hasan were to be named the candidate for the prime minister.

“If you ask the man on the street, they prefer Mohamad Hasan under the current situation,” he said.

He said this was because he is perceived as not only credible but also more moderate.
