UMP ranked 97th among world’s greenest university campuses

KUANTAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has improved its ranking in the world stage, moving up to  97, from its 107th position,  in the UI (University of Indonesia)-GreenMetric World University Ranking for 2017.

The improvement also saw UMP making sixth place in Malaysia, 29th in Asia and 16th in Southeast Asia based on the green campus sustainability and environmental management efforts.

The assessment is based on six main criteria: land and infrastructure (15 percent), energy and climate change (21 percent), waste (18 percent), water (10 percent), transportation (18 percent) and education (18 percent).

The Green Metric World University Ranking is a university ranking platform established by the University of Indonesia in 2010. It evaluates and ranks universities all over the world according to their current condition and policies related to green campus and sustainability activities.

UMP vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Daing Nasir Ibrahim in a statement said the achievement was because of the university’s continuous commitment to conserve and preserve the environment through various effective teaching, research, co-curriculum activities and quality management system based on environmental management.

“UMP also practises the 3R (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle) concept in managing various types of waste produced by the university,” he added. – Bernama
