KUCHING: Three students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, have joined Hope Place for their fieldwork practice again this year.

This fieldwork practice, which is one of the core subjects in their 4th semester, has to be carried out in a social welfare agency or organisation.

Hope Place has opened its doors for higher learning institutions such as Unimas since 2016 to either participate as volunteers, internship, fieldwork course or do research.

“We hope to expose students to practical day-to-day social work and to help them understand the community’s conditions and needs,” said Kelvin Wan, founder of Hope Place.

This year, fieldwork students are attached to Hope Place once a week on every Thursday, starting from Sept 26 to Dec 12.

Priority is for the students to learn about the organisation’s core service and to complete a case study with the team. Their fieldwork also includes participating in interview sessions with new recipients as well as data entry.

Unimas has been collaborating with Hope Place since 2017 in fieldwork practice for its students.
