MIRI: Police on Friday arrested three local men believed to be members of the ‘Undertaker Ameng’, a gang of grave robbers, in connection with multiple cases of grave robbing and desecration at cemeteries here.

According to Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah, police considered at least three cases solved following the arrests of the trio.

“They are aged from 16 to 27 years old,” he said when contacted yesterday.

The suspects were picked up from various locations in Miri in a raid that started at 5pm on Friday.

During searches performed as part of the investigation, police recovered stolen items that included jewellery pieces valued at RM5,000.

Police believed the valuables were taken from corpses.

Police also detained the buyer of the valuables for questioning.

According to ACP Lim, more arrests are expected to be made in connection with the incident.

The offence is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code for trespassing on burial places and Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
