KUCHING: Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) and UCSI University Sarawak Campus (UCSI) are jointly organising the Sarawak Youth Talent Contest 2019.

Aiming to foster creativity among the youth and provide a platform for them to be actively involved in tourism development, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the contest is unlike any other talent contests that involve singing or acting.

“This talent contest which is held for the first time and one of a kind, will require them to produce videos or posters related to Sarawak’s history, culture, heritage including places of interest,” he said in a press conference after chairing a meeting with UCSI at the Baitulmakmur building here, yesterday.

He added that the initiative would encourage and instil interest in the youth to participate in the state’s tourism industry.

“This will also encourage Sarawakian youth to be involved in responsible tourism, such as to better manage and care for nature. At the same time to unearth young talent in the state,” he stressed.

Themed ‘Culture, Adventure, Nature, Food and Festival’ with a tagline ‘Towards Responsible Tourism’, it is open to Sarawakian secondary school students aged 14 to 17, and university or college students aged 18 to 24 years.

Divided into two categories, namely one-minute videography and storytelling poster design, the top three winners in both categories will each win RM500 while another two recommended winners will get RM200 each.

“Non-monetary rewards will also be given to motivate the contestants, such as by projecting their works at a public platform in Kuching International Airport (KIA), Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or even Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

“The winners also get to have dinner with the minister or prominent tourism personnel. For me, I would love to meet these youth,” said Abdul Karim.
