The convicted man heads to prison to serve his 8 years’ jail.

SIBU: A jobless man was sentenced to eight years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court yesterday for voluntarily causing hurt to a security guard during an attempted robbery.

Justice Caroline Bee Majail ordered the accused, Nelson Tungku of Rumah Gramong Pasir Putih Agam Tiga, Jln Entabai, Julau to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on March 21 after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The accused was charged under Sections 394 and 397 of the Penal Code.

According to the police report, at about 4.25pm on March 21, the accused saw the victim, Ingkan Nabau, 66, on duty at Level 3 of the central market, which housed the car parking section.

He walked from behind the victim who was then sitting on a chair with the intention to rob him. However, the victim looked behind and this caused the accused to panic.

The accused threw a sharp object which hit the victim’s back, as a result the victim was hospitalised with critical injury on his back.

Police on the same day arrested the accused and seized a knife which he used to injure the victim.
