SADONG JAYA: Malaysia’s position as an elected member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has elevated the country to another level in the global scene.

According to Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac) Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, it is an honour for the country to be elected as a member of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (IGC-ICH) as it is not easy to be part of them.

“Now that we have a representative in the IGC-ICH, we will be able to share our opinions, comments and participate in the decisions made in UNESCO.

“With this, we can further safeguard our heritage and influence UNESCO in giving their solid support to Malaysia,” she said after officiating at the Ibadah Korban programme at Masjid Riadusshalihin Semera, here on Tuesday (July 12).

She noted that it is significant to have representatives in UNESCO as they (the representative) can share with it what Malaysia has and obtain guidance from them before Malaysia joins any competition.

“Our country has many (heritage and cultural) treasures that we have to protect. That is why it is important for us to work with our neighbouring countries (which have a similar heritage with us) before we showcase our work to UNESCO,” she said.

Having said that, Nancy pointed out that prior to this, Malaysia managed to gain UNESCO recognition while cooperating with other countries like on the wangkang ceremony which Malaysia was jointly nominated with China; and the pantun which it was jointly nominated with Indonesia.

“With us now being part of the committee, we hope that we will be able to gain more recognition from UNESCO henceforth,” she expressed.

Malaysia was elected as a member of UNESCO IGC-ICH from 2022 to 2026 after securing 110 out of 132 votes over other Asia Pacific countries.
