KOTA SAMARAHAN: Special number plates offered by University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have garnered overwhelming interest among enthusiasts.

Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said there would be a second round of bidding for the number plates which would go on until all are sold.

“I was surprised by the amount of interest shown by the people out there. Maybe the alumni, students, staff members, and (Unimas’s) friends out there want to be a part of this historic programme.

“So far, the biddings are very encouraging and we will continue to promote this,” he said when met by reporters after officiating at a handing over ceremony of assistance to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) St Patrick Bau here yesterday (Jul 7).

He added that the main objective of the programme was to provide assistance to needy students in which all proceeds, minus the costs, will be channelled to the university’s student welfare funds.

Among the numbers available for bidding are UNIMAS 11 until UNIMAS 9999 starting from RM350, RM888, RM1500, RM2000, RM2500 and RM6000.

However, some parties had also shown great interest in UNIMAS 1 until UNIMAS 10.

“We have received offers of up to RM500,000 for these numbers. However, we have yet to approve this DUE to the long processes involved.

“We will keep their identities and their numbers of choice a secret,” he told.

Previously, the Special number plates were made available to the public with bidding open until 12pm on July 7 available exclusively through the UNIMAS8 system.
