KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Times Higher Education (THE) Young University rankings were released last Thursday, and Unimas was at 301st.

About 10 universities in Malaysia were listed, led by UTM (101st-150th), followed by UTP, Utar, UKM, USM, UPM, UUM, Uniten, UiTM and Unimas.

The rankings list the best universities under 50 years old, assessing them on teaching, research, international outlook and their work with industries.

Thirteen carefully calibrated performance indicators are used to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industries and governments.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas — teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students and research) and industry income (knowledge transfer).

THE has produced three subset rankings — Millennials (universities established between 2000 and the present day), Generation Y (established between 1986 and 1999) and Generation X (established between 1968 and 1985).

THE has also looked at the best institutions founded between 1945 and 1967 — known as the Golden Age for public higher education.

Being more than 50 years old (although still very young for universities), these institutions fall outside the parameters of the Young University rankings.

However, they are well worth a look if one is interested in some of the international higher education’s rising stars.
