Unimas inks deal with foundation

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), in an effort to further boost the performance of its medical students with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FMHS), has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Kenyalang Medical Foundation (KMF).

Under the MOA signed on Monday (Sept 6), medical students who excel in their respective fields would be given awards, sponsored by KMF.

The awards are divided into seven categories, namely:

  • Best Year 1 Medical Student,
  • Best Year 2 Medical Student
  • Best Year 3 Medical Student
  • Best Year 4 Medical Student
  • Best Student in Family Medicine
  • Best Year 4 Student in Paediatrics
  • Best Year 5 Student in Paediatrics

Vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi signed on behalf of Unimas while KMF was represented by its chairman Dr Mahadhir Alhady Sulaiman.

Prof Kadim expressed his hope that the awards would serve as a catalyst for excellence, encouraging the students to pursue their goals of becoming a specialist doctor after graduation.

He said like Unimas, KMF also had the objective of providing higher education opportunities to all levels of society.

“We hope that our cooperation can further increase the number of doctors in Sarawak, especially among Sarawakians themselves.”

The ceremony also saw the presentation of KMF 2020 Best Student Awards to 10 FMSH. Professor Dr Asri Said, who is FMHS dean, received the award on behalf of the students.

In a separate development, Prof Kadim disclosed that Unimas was in the midst of building a university teaching hospital with a capacity of 300 beds.

He added that since 2007, Unimas had successfully produced 58 specialist doctors.
