Unimas medical students appreciative of scholarships

KUCHING: Happy and appreciative are words that aptly describe the reactions of the 40 medical students of University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) who received Yayasan Sarawak scholarships yesterday.

The scholarships for the 2018/2019 academic year were presented to them by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during a ceremony held in the atrium of the State Legislative Assembly building here.

Andy Lau Yueh Lee, 19, from Lanang, Sibu said he felt very honoured to be a recipient of the scholarship.

“I thank the Sarawak government and also Yayasan Sarawak for giving the financial help for me to complete my medical degree,” he said.

“After graduation, I would like to become a good doctor and provide the best quality medical care to Sarawakians.

“If possible, I want to be an orthopedic specialist and an orthopedic surgeon,” said the second of three siblings.

Another medical student, Philips Nyalau Anak Juing, from Sibu, said, “I feel quite happy to get the scholarship since it will ease my parents’ financial burden. So now I can happily continue my studies.”

Another recipient, Siti Nurshamila Sheffaee from Petrajaya said, “I am very glad as I didn’t expect to get the scholarship. Now I need to work harder so that I can achieve what I aim for in the medical field.”

The youngest of three siblings said she has an elder brother who is a doctor and he is the one who inspired her to enter the medical field.

Roslind Dubit Anak Sabang from Skim B Meradong, Bintangor said she felt very happy to get the scholarship.

“I appreciate it very much. So to reciprocate I have to study very hard to become a doctor and serve the country,” she said.

Kuching local Muhd Haziq Bin Khalid who also felt very honoured said his hard work had paid off. The youngest of three siblings said he fancied becoming a neurologist. His father Khalid who accompanied him to the ceremony thanked Sarawak government for the scholarship and for having selected his son to be one of the recipients.

“It is not easy to get the scholarship. You have to be the best student, so thanks so much to Yayasan Sarawak and the State government for the opportunity,” he said.
