UNIMAS placed second in concrete canoe competition

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A team from UNIMAS won second place with RM10,000 cash prize and a trophy in the Malaysia Concrete Canoe Competition (MCCC) 2017. It was held at Tasik Varsiti, Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur from 25 – 26 November 2017.

The team also won the Special Award for Best Design Poster. In a press statement issued yesterday, the UNIMAS team was said to be represented by undergraduate students from the Civil Engineering Program, namely Leong Geok Teng, Liow Ching Vern, Bong Yi Jie, Nurrizzuwanni bt Hairuddin, Dyg Nur Aina Syafiqa bt Awang Japar, Chia Chuong Yan, Moreen anak Inson, Eme Lina anak Iran@Eran, Vong Pik Quan and Law Hui Soon.

The team was supervised by Prof Dr Md. Abdul Mannan, Associate Prof Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Safawi Mohd Zain and Prof Dr Ng Chee Khoon from the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, UNIMAS. The event was jointly organized by the American Concrete Ins t i tute (ACI ) – Malays i a Chapter, Concrete Society of Malaysia (CSM) and Universiti Malaya.

The competition was judged based on design report, product presentation, oral presentation and canoe race. Amongst the local universities participated were Universiti Malaya, Universi t i Teknologi MARA Shah Alam, Universiti Selangor, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and University College Technology Sarawak.

Among the main objectives of the MCCC 2017 were to provide civil engineering students with hands-on and practical experiences by working to innovate concrete mix designs as well as exerting their leadership skill in project management.
