SAMARAHAN: The Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub Library (PETARY), UNIMAS ore than 30 poem books were donated to.
In conjunction with the Institute of Borneo Studies (IBS) Open Day yesterday (Oct 12), Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad chief executive officer Datuk Muhammad Medan Abdullah presented several copies of his poem book ‘Poems from the Jungle Boy’ to library director Levas Mejus.
The book will benefit university students to promote and sustain the use of English language among students.
“I am happy and grateful to be given the opportunity to present copies of my books to UNIMAS for the reading pleasure and enjoyment of students and staff.
“This effort is also in line with one of Bintulu Port’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative which focuses on education,” said Medan in his speech during a brief handover ceremony.
He added that, as English is an international language, Sarawakians should be encouraged to use the language as a medium of communication.
“My poems are written both in English and Bahasa Malaysia as well as in my ethnic Kelabit dialect.
“In writing my poems mainly in English, I expressed my hope that it will encourage young Malaysians, especially Sarawakians, to have a global outlook apart from appreciating the use of English as a language of knowledge and effective international communication and interaction,” he said.
Levas said that she was happy to accept the books which will be a useful contribution towards promoting and sustaining the use of English among UNIMAS students.
