Unimas shines at ITEX 2017

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) bagged a gold medal and nine silver medals at the 28th International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2017 held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 11 to 13 May, 2017.

The event was organised by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) and supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Education Malaysia.

ITEX2017 attracted more than 500 exhibitors and research products from all over Malaysia.

The participants came from 115 institutions, 30 universities and 15 research institutions.

Dr Lau Sei Ping won the gold medal with his invention titled “From Grid- to Solar-Powered Streetlights: A Distributed Traffic-Aware Lighting Control Scheme with Energy-Neutral and Predictive Behaviour”.

Meanwhile, the products which won the silver medals and their winners  are as follows: “Night Cooled Water For Radiant Modular Radiant Cooling Prototype In Malaysia Building” by Associate Professor Dr Azhaili Baharun; “Culture of Alien Freshwater Lobster (Cherax quadricarinatus) in Malaysia” by Associate Professor Dr Khairun Adha A. Rahim;  “Production of Bacteriocin from Sago Starch in Continous Mode”  by Associate Professor Dr Cirilo Nolasco Hipolito; “Impact of CO2, Hydroelectricity Consumption on Growth In Malaysia” by Associate Professor Dr Evan Lau;  “The Effective Selection of Next Hop Node Based on Mobility Prediction for Habitat Monitoring in MASNETs”  by Dr Mohamad Nazim Jambli;  “ProColony: Automatic Colony Counting on-the-go” by Dr Jacey Lynn Minoi, “Accelerating Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test via Mobile Apps (m-AST)” by Dr Tan Cheng Siang, “Localisation of Scratch Programming Environment in Raspberry Pi”  by Dr Stephanie Chua Hui Li;   “LexiVibe: Virtual Reality-based Vocabulary Learning Environment for Visually-Impaired Children”  by Chuah Kee Man and Radina Mohamad Deli.

“We are quite pleased with these achievements.  They  competed with almost 570 research product during the exhibition,” said Unimas vice-chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi during the press conference at the Staff Lounge of Unimas, yesterday.

Kadim added that Unimas was focusing on research and innovation activities.

“We would like to ensure that the research and innovation activities are relevant to the country’s needs, can be commercialised and  can help to generate incomes for the university,

“Those products  have the potential to be commecialised by the industrial partners either from the local industries or international industries.

“For the last two years, 12 research products from Unimas have been commercialised by our industrial partners from the local as well as international industries. It has been a great success and achievement for Unimas,” he added.
