KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) sports centre has been renamed Arena Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang in honour of Sarawak’s second Yang di-Pertua Negeri.

In announcing this today, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said this was to commemorate the services and sacrifices made by the former Head of State.

The ceremony at the university here was graced by wife to the Chief Minister and daughter of the former Head of State, Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

Kadim, in sharing the life of the late Tuanku Bujang, said he was a statesman who dedicated his life to public service, being a serviceman for Sarawak Rangers back in 1941.

“Tun Tuanku Bujang was later awarded the title ‘Datu’ in June 1954. He retired thereafter from the civil service in Dec 1960 after serving for 26 years.  He then served as the second Yang di-Pertua Negeri from April 2,1969 until April 2, 1977.

“He received several medals and awards throughout his life in carrying out his duties to the country. Among them were the Member of The British Empire (MBE) in 1967 and Order of The British Empire (OBE) in 1962.

“In 1970, he was awarded the Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN) which carries the title ‘Tun’ by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.”

Kadim said it was fitting for the varsity to honour prominent state leaders for their contributions to the state and country.

“This will remind us, especially the younger generation, to appreciate the services of those who have fought for the state.

“Our existence today is the result of their previous sacrifices. The harmony of life among us today is the result of their wisdom, which laid a solid foundation in shaping the state as we know it today.”
