KUCHING: The one-month postponement for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s (Unimas) admission of pre-university students was done to ensure that the wellbeing and students’ safety are at optimum level.

Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the decision was made in view of the rise in Covid-19 positive cases in the state, especially in Kuching and Kota Samarahan.

“Despite that, the actual registration will be done online. In fact, the teaching and learning sessions will also be done via digital platforms starting Aug 3.

“Students will be able to physically attend class on Sept 1 onwards,” he told New Sarawak Tribune via phone conversation today (July 26).

Last Friday, Unimas announced that the admission date of student intake for the 2020/2021 session, scheduled to begin on Aug 1, has been postponed to Sept 1.

This was subsequently announced by Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) during daily Covid-19 update on the same day.

Kadim also mentioned that the returning undergraduates would not be affected as they would be returning on Oct 1.

On Unimas’ part, he said the university will ensure that the standard operating procedure (SOP) is strictly complied with to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“The campus is strictly controlled and managed by our security division. At present, there are about 500 students on campus.

“Some of them are postgraduates while others are students who we have permitted to stay back in order for them to have access to better Internet and education facilities on campus,” he said.
