Unimas to increase PKRC capacity if needed

Unimas’ Rafflesia college is being used as a PKRC.

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will increase the capacity of the Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) at its Rafflesia college in Kota Samarahan if the need arises.

Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said currently, the PKRC could accommodate 440 patients in five student residential blocks.

“At first, the Unimas PKRC only had 220 beds for Category 1 and Category 2 Covid-19 cases in three student residential blocks.

“However, today the varsity has agreed to add two more blocks, increasing the capacity to 440 beds due to the increase in cases in Kuching, Samarahan and Serian divisions.

“The need to add more will be discussed according to the current needs,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (June 3) after visiting the Rafflesia PKRC.

Last week, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee advisor Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said three PKRCs had been set up in Kuching and Samarahan.

The two PKRCs in Kuching are Dewan Kompleks Belia dan Sukan Sarawak and Dewan Construction Industry Development Board in Petra Jaya. Meanwhile, in Samarahan, Unimas’ Rafflesia college is the designated PKRC.

Dr Sim thanked Senior Minister (Infrastructure Cluster) Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Prof Kadim for facilitating.

“It does matter whether the (facilities are under) the state or federal government, the focus and priority now is to save Sarawakian lives,” he added.
