UNIMAS to offer programme on smelting technology

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) will soon conduct a programme on Certificate in Manufacturing Technology (Smelting Technology) following the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA)  between the university, UNIMAS Edu Sdn Bhd and OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd.

The MoA was signed at the university’s main campus here, on Friday (Feb 11).

The programme will be offered to OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s technical staff.

“It is designed to produce participants equipped with strong background and skills required to build their career in production, management, and service relevant to furnace management.

“Moreover, the participants will be introduced to the fundamental of smelting processes, thus giving them the overview of engineering in industrial manufacturing processes,” UNIMAS said in a statement.

Among the objectives of the programme is to produce a trained workforce with basic understanding in ferroalloys and smelting processes. It will also create a trained workforce with basic operational skills and safety awareness to help engineers in their everyday tasks.

“The certification programme consists of nine courses, including a six months practical training.

“Qualified lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering will handle the theoretical part while the practical aspect will be taken care by academicians from the faculty in collaboration with OM Material (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd staff,” the university added.

The MoA was signed by UNIMAS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Kadim Suadi, chairman of board of directors UNIMAS Edu Sdn Bhd Professor Datuk Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman and OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd managing director Chen Xiaodong.

Witnessing the signing was the dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib, chief executive officer of UNIMAS Edu Sdn Bhd Professor Dr Puah Chin Hong and OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd general manager-HR Chee Lai Pek.

Assistant Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dr Annuar Rapaee also attended the signing ceremony.
