KOTA SAMARAHAN: A new centralised examination hall was constructed in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) to house its growing number of students sitting for examinations.

The hall, known as Wakaf Yusuf Marais was built in partnership with OBYU Holdings Sdn. Bhd.

Declaring it open yesterday, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the project materialised after Unimas received RM5 million in endowment from OBYU Holdings as well as contributions from the staffs and general public for its construction.

Mohamad Kadim stated that the idea of building the centralised examination hall was discussed in 2017 when Unimas began experiencing a steady increase in students intake.

“I express my gratitude to OBYU Holdings for its generous endowment and enabling us to build this hall which I am sure will greatly improve our teaching and learning process as well as providing space for students during examinations.

“This is not our first venture with OBYU Holdings, we’ve been working together for almost 10 years now accomplishing many things along the years,” he said.

Mohamad Kadim added that the Wakaf Yusuf Merais hall development fund was still accepting endowments and contributions to fully complete the facility. This includes funding for examination desks and chairs, flooring, and teaching apparatus.

“The hall will be available for rent to the general public and proceeds will go to Unimas Endowment Fund in an effort to aid underprivileged students.”

Meanwhile, OBYU Holdings chairman Ahmadi Yusoff said they chose to work with Unimas because it is a place where opportunities are given to Sarawakians and has become a symbol of pride for Sarawak. “We want to give back to the community in a small and subtle way and we feel that Unimas is where this can be achieved,” said Ahmadi.
