KUCHING: Newly-elected Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Kullin Djayang has urged the Ministry of Education (MoE) to address concerns regarding Education Service Officers (PPP) in Sarawak.

In making the call he said this was because when promoted to the DG 52 grade, headmasters and senior assistants (primary school) had to relinquish their administrative roles and return to the classroom as regular academic teachers.

He added that it has an impact on the administrative management and suggested that the MoE reorganise grades for the affected headmasters and senior assistants so that they continue in their jobs even if the grade increases, thus preventing a chaotic administrative situation.

He also requested that MoE raise the Excellent Teacher (GC) qualification in primary schools from the limited grade of DG 48 to DG 54, to make it the same qualification as a secondary school teacher, thereby ensuring fairness.

“Not to mention the acute scarcity of Islamic teachers and for various subjects in Sarawak, which are always left vacant by peninsula teachers who return home after a few years of service.

“This concern will not be resolved as long as the vacancy is not filled by local teachers, I hope the MoE will treat this situation seriously,” he said.

Kullin took over the helm from Adam Prakash Abdullah during the STU 26th Biennial Delegates’ Conference for the 2022-2024 session.

Also present to officiate at the conference was Minister of Education, Innovative and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah.
