Union helps hardcore poor families, community centres

Donations to two of the seven hardcore poor families in Miri/Bintulu by SBEU Northern Region

KUCHING: The Sarawak Bank Employees’ Union (SBEU) recently handed over cash donations totalling RM12,000  to 15 hardcore poor families and two community centres in the Kuching, Bau, Serian, Sibu, Sarikei, Miri, and Bintulu districts.

The cash donations were given away in conjunction with the union’s 55th anniversary celebration.

“We hope the cash assistance will provide some relief to the families of the less fortunate and welfare homes during these challenging times.

“While SBEU continues to strive for better benefits for its members and we managed to get a 10-12 percent salary increase in 2018, the union does not forget the less fortunate in our society.

“Every year, we set aside a portion of our funds, especially from the levy collection of members (10 percent), for welfare activities as part of our community responsibilities,” SBEU said in its statement.

It added that the union was established on Sept 22, 1966 while the welfare fund started in 1993.

“Our welfare activities included statewide blood donation drives, charity fun runs, visits to old aged homes and participation at open day sales of charitable organisations such as Blind Centre, Children Cancer Ward, Tree Planting, visit to Pibakis/Pibakat, Charity Sales, Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti, One Stop Fair Charity, Bakti and many others, We have handed out assistance in cash and kind worth more than half a million ringgit,” said SBEU.

The union had also jointly organised a virtual webinar titled ‘Stress Management and Job Empowerment’ together with Sarawak Commercial Banks’ Association.

“The objective of the programme was to assist our members and executive grades of 14 commercial banks in enriching their job satisfaction and improving their productivity.
