SIBU: The Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) has offered to help four families, whose houses in Kampung Sentosa, Jalan Salim here were razed in a recent fire, apply for Sarawak Rental Assistance Scheme (SRAS).

Its chairman Chambai Lindong, in a statement today (Oct 7), noted that the state government through Housing Development Corporation (HDC) was implementing the scheme for low-income families.

“Hopefully, this assistance can be channeled to them. If needed, we are ready to help them apply for this scheme.

“Currently, all the victims are temporarily staying with their relatives while waiting for new houses to be built.

“Even though they intend to build a new house, it is not an easy thing considering they are not well-off families.

“In this regard, the victims hope the government can offer a housing scheme to them so that they can build new houses as soon as possible,” he said.

Chambai and his exco members presented basic necessities and a sum of cash when visiting the four families.

“Apart from us, several other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and several political parties have also extended relief assistance.

“We understand that the Sibu Welfare Department is also sending aid to them,” he added.

In the incident at 8.45pm last Sunday, three houses occupied by four families, located in Lot 238, Lot 239 and Lot 240 of Kampung Usahajaya Baru, Sentosa, were destroyed by fire.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
