BAU: Sarawak has to maintain its unity in order to become the main powerhouse in the country in terms of economic development, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The state’s progress is good as the fundamentals including unity are already intact. Sarawak  only needs to work on increasing its revenue and enhancing its economy,” he pointed out.

“This is unlike the situation in Peninsular Malaysia that is very unstable. Whenever there is a Parliament sitting, they will raise  the issue of who should become the prime minister.

“This then affects the confidence of the private sector in development. However, Sarawak is so far  good and we should maintain what we have,” he said when officiating at the Bau Bicentennial Celebration (BBC) 2020 held at Tasik Biru here on Thursday (Dec 31).

Abang Johari added that Sarawak was the home of many talents including Pandalela Rinong,

He said for the last one and a half years, many Sarawakian professionals had come back to the state to work and develop the state’s economy.

“When I announced plans to develop the autonomous rail transit (ART), set  up the state’s petrochemical hub and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), many professionals came back to help us because the level of our economy has increased.

“When our economy was still at a lower level, these professionals could not apply or optimise their expertise in Sarawak.

“Therefore, with a better economic growth to date, we will be able to develop the state, provided that we remain united,” he explained.
