MIRI: The people of Baram have been told that their district will be developed.

This assurance was given by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg today at Long Pillah, Baram where he handed over Sarawak Alternative Rural Electrification Scheme (Sares) projects to 13 longhouses within Telang Usan constituency.

However, there is one straight forward caveat to the promise — the people must be united and fully support Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“Stand united and renew GPS’ mandate, and we will ensure that Baram gets transformed just as other rural areas are developed,” he said.

He emphasised that Baram would continue to be a main focus of the state government while taking care of other rural areas that also needed attention.

“I prefer less politicking. It is better to do more to help the people. That’s what we are doing, unlike some political parties in West Malaysia whose leaders are competing to be the next prime minister,” he said.

Hence, he reminded Sarawakians to strengthen their unity as it could help to stabilise the government.

“They (political parties in Malaya) should not cause political instability now as we are fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. They should just look after the people instead,” he said.

The Sares projects costing RM35 million are powering the homes of more than 6,000 people in 725 households in 13 villages — Long Pilah, Long Luteng, Long Daloh Bestari, Long Miri, Long Tebangan, Long Liam Keliman, Long Sobeng, Long Selapun, Long Sebatang, Long Sengung, Long Pala, Long Buah and Long Buken.

Minister of Utilities Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Baram MP Anyie Ngau, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker cum Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi and Sarawak Enegry’s vice president for rural electrification Dr Chen Shiun were among those who attended the event.
