KUCHING: A jobless man was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here in default of two months’ jail for disrupting the full rehearsal of the decorated boat parade held last Thursday (July 27).

Muzakie Mahidi, 41, pleaded guilty to the charge on Monday (July 31), under Section 186 of the Penal Code, which could carry a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.

The incident occurred at around 8.45pm at the Square Tower guest stage. A police officer responsible for security spotted an unknown man trespassing onto the guest of honour’s stage, disturbing the dancers who were practicing for the event.

The officer, along with other volunteer members, arrested the man, and he was taken to the secretariat tent for documentation.

However, during the process, Muzakie attempted to escape by swinging his right hand at the police officer’s face and struggled to free himself.

With the assistance of Rela members, the man was re-arrested, but not without sustaining injuries to his cheek and chin due to the struggle.
