MIRI: Students here are invited to take part in Upcycle Ocean Trash Competition this September in conjunction with World Cleanup Day 2022.

Pustaka Negeri Sarawak (Pustaka) Miri, in a statement today, said the competition was to utilise rubbish or trash items from the sea to make a replica of the new building of Miri City Hall.

“The competition which is sponsored by SapuraOMV is divided into two categories – primary school students and secondary school students.

“Each school can send unlimited teams,” said Pustaka Miri in the statement.

The competition is jointly organised by Pustaka, Miri, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Unit of Miri City Council, Future Ocean Borneo PLT, Coco Cabana Miri and Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA).

“The objective of the competition is to instil the culture of inventiveness and innovation using discarded items found on beaches in Miri amongst the community, particularly students.

“It is also hoped it will be able to promote recycling and upcycling to reduce the amount of trash dumped, especially into the ocean and hence, reduce pollution.

Attractive prizes are up for grabs in the form of cash prizes, trophies, and certificates for the top five winners from each category as well as a special SDG Future Ocean Borneo Award.

“The last date to confirm entries is on September 1 while the exhibition and judging will be on September 17,” said the statement.
