KUCHING:  Work on the proposed rehabilitation (upgrading) of old Kuching-Bau Road (Batu Kitang Section i.e from Mile 7th Traffic Light to Keranji Town) will start in early September.

The upgrading work on the road covering a distance of 5.8 km will cost RM3.5 million, Batu Kitang State Assemblyman and Padawan Municipal Council Chairman, Lo Khere Chiang revealed yesterday.

“The project  will start in September, 2017 and is expected to be completed in November, 2017.

“Once completed, residents in Batu Kitang will be able to experience a smooth and nice road. Batu Kitang will look even more beautiful and it will be a good ride all the way from 7th Mile to Keranji town,” he told reporters during a site visit with Divisional Engineer, Awang Mohd Fadillah yesterday.

On why the project had to start in September, Lo explained that although the pipeline had been laid, it had not been commissioned yet.

“So we don’t want a situation where we have to dig the road again. That is why we want to wait till September when the pipe is commissioned, ” he said, adding that, the Divisional Engineer had mentioned that work on the project would be carried out at night.

Lo thanked the government for the allocation of RM3.5 million to improve the road.

He also revealed that traffic lights would be installed at the road junction to Kpg Haji Baki. He said RM350,000 had been approved for traffic light project. The tender  had already been called, closed and was now being evaluated.

Lo also saidthat the Public Work Department (JKR)  would be upgrading the Batu Kitang Bridge’s expansion joint at a cost of RM190,000. Work on it will take two weeks.

Lo said after the improvement work on the Batu Kitang Road upgrading had been done, he would source for money under his RTP (Rural Transformation Project) fund to put up the street-lightings.

“I may not be able to do it at one go, but over a period of time, I will be able to get the money to get Batu Kitang Road lighted up in the next few years,” he said.

Lo added he had been informed by Divisional Engineer that RM500,000 had been approved for the street lighting project at Jalan Landeh.

He said the street lighting project would be completed  by SESCo before the end of this year.

“The promise to source half million ringgit to put up street lighting along Jalan Landeh was made during lthe ast state election by Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, now Chief Minister, when he was Minister of Housing and Tourism.

“I am very pleased to say that all these are election promises and pledges and we are  slowly fullfilling them one by one,” said Lo.
