KUCHING:  Malaysians have been urged to continue upholding the spirit of nationalism under the umbrella of ‘Jalur Gemilang’ (national flag).

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said every citizen must also continue to serve the country sincerely   in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic which was still plaguing the state and country.

“When the country is faced with Covid-19, the words of wisdom of former United States president John F Kennedy who said ‘Ask not what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for the country’ is very relevant today.

“This is not the time for us to ask ‘what can I get’ but to continue sincerely serving the country,” he said when officiating at the state-level National Month and Flying of the National Flag 2021 programme at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex on Monday (Aug 16).

Abang Johari also extended his gratitude to the frontliners statewide who had served tirelessly and sacrificed all personal and family interests to ensure that the state was safe from the virus.

The chief minister added that Malaysia was a country for all its citizens regardless of where they originally came from.

“With that, in conjunction with the National Month and Flying of the National Flag, let us all fly our national flag, whether at home, office or shop building as a symbol of patriotism towards building a better Malaysia,” said Abang Johari.

Early on, the launch of the programme was shown live on Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (UKAS) Facebook; it was attended by 100 people in strict compliance to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Abang Johari also flagged off the Jalur Gemilang convoy which started from the DUN Complex and ended at the Information Department Office (JaPen) at Jalan Diplomatik in Petra Jaya.
