UPSR goes on

KUCHING: The Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) went on as scheduled although 409 schools in the state were closed yesterday due to the haze.

The state Education Department’s statistics yesterday highlighted the plight of 157,479 students under the education offices of Betong, Bau, Kuching, Lubok Antu, Padawan, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman and Lundu.

From the 409 schools, 347 are secondary schools and 62 are primary schools.

Padawan has the highest number of schools closed at 101 — 86 primary and 15 secondary schools.

Kuching recorded the highest number of students affected — 60,509 students from 61 primary schools and 26 secondary schools.

As of 4pm yesterday, the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings for Kuching, Kota Samarahan and Sri Aman remains at the unhealthy levels with API readings at 139, 118 and 179 respectively.
