A FIRE and Rescue Department (Bomba) is urgently needed at the Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) in Sungai Asap.

Kennedy Chukpai Ugon (GPS-Murum) pointed out the recent fire tragedy in Uma Bawang had affected and caused miseries to residents of the 259-door-longhouse.

“This is the eleventh fire incident that occurred in BRS Sungai Asap,” he said in the August House when debating the motion of appreciation to TYT’s opening address.

“We are seriously in need of a fire station there; this is because we could not afford to witness any more tragedy causing the loss of property or even lives,” he pointed out.

It takes three hours from the Bintulu Fire Station to get to BRS Sungai Asap area, he added.

“Because of this sort of situation, there is a need to build a fire station in BRS Sungai Asap.

“And if the fire station is there, it will serve around 20,000 people and fifty longhouses in the area including Tubau,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the fire victims, Chukpai thanked the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for his announcement of the RM70,000 aid for each household to rebuild their home.

“However, of the 259 doors affected, 116 doors still cannot afford to re-build their homes; it is hoped the government could provide assistance immediately,” he said.
