KUCHING: Electric bills go up during the festive seasons because people use a lot of electricity, said Rural Electricity Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.
He pointed out that the increased use of electrical appliances and extra lights in their homes would drive up the electricity bills.
“I’d like to advise the public to use electricity wisely during Hari Raya so that they will spend less on their electric bills after the celebration,” he told reporters when met at his Hari Raya open house at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) yesterday.
Dr Abdul Rahman also revealed his ministry had received many complaints about illegal electricity connections.
“Connecting electricity supply illegally must be prevented because it is dangerous,” he said, adding that it could lead to short circuits and fires.
“Secondly, it is illegal and could cause problems for other consumers. The culprits might be stealing other people’s electricity, leading the other parties to pay for higher electric bills.”
Dr Abdul Rahman said his ministry would try to ensure that all houses in Sarawak were equipped with electricity by 2025.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg visited the assistant minister at his open house at 11.30am yesterday.
